The Combined Bomber Offensive in World War II was a coordinated effort between American and British bombers and fighter aircraft to attempt to bomb the Nazi war machine into submission. While it might have fallen short of its lofty goals, the offensive is still an important and fascinating story with many lessons to pass on. This book attempts to take new, innovative approaches to exploring this classic case study. Instead of just recounting historical events, this book aims to extract key lessons about how to fight and win a real air campaign by analyzing how American and British leaders made decisions, solved problems and adapted to changes on the battlefield.
The Combined Bomber Offensive was an evolutionary contest where both sides continually introduced new creative innovations and tactics in a move-countermove decision cycle. This book breaks these evolutions into seven distinct phases and then examines each one in terms of four critical elements: targeting, bomber survivability (including fighter escort capabilities), bombing accuracy and bomb damage. The second half of the book then attempts to identify and analyze key patterns that are particularly relevant to the art and science of fighting and winning an air campaign.
This book is different from most military history books. It is designed to be a quick read but contain concentrated, distilled knowledge, all of which is useful for a military professional or someone seeking to achieve mastery of the subject matter. The aim is to pack as much useful information and insights as possible into the smallest and most easily digestible package while still telling an interesting and enjoyable story. The book is also part of a larger course available online that includes additional readings, video, audio, decision games, live discussion, quizzes and interactive exercises.
The book is 80-pages long and includes dozens of maps, diagrams, charts and pictures to make learning easier, as well as a built-in reading notes/summary section at the end to help readers internalize and master the information. Topics covered in the book include…
- Evolution of the RAF night bombing and US daylight bombing campaigns
- Development and evolution of new fighter tactics and technologies to better protect the bombers including phased-escort and drop tanks
- Technological innovations to improve navigation, bombing accuracy, radar jamming and bomber survivability
- Analysis of key missions and campaigns including the Ruhr, Dam Busters Raid, Schweinfurt, Ploesti, Pointblank and Berlin
- German air defense countermeasures and night-fighter operations
